MICHAEL GEIST The most beautiful and the rarest thing in the world is a complete human life, unified by intelligent purpose and accomplishment, blessed with many attributes and employed in sharing old world traditions, with a fiery spirit that never dimmed and was always growing. Such a rarely beautiful life is that of Michael Geist. It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Michael Geist on Sunday, April 15, 2007. With family at his side Michael passed away at Victoria General Hospital at the age of 85, after a struggle with heart and lung diseases. Born October 19, 1921 in Sch ssburg Romania, a home to almost nine centuries of existence of a Saxon (German) community he grew up and lived his childhood experiencing a rich heritage with old world traditions. During war time he was displaced from his family and ended up in Germany where he met his wife Regina. Michael came to Canada in 1951, wed Regina in 1952 and together they began their journey of building a new life. Michael began working at Dominion Tannery while juggling night school. He then moved on to Labatt Breweries where he worked for 28 years and retired at age 65. He was a man of many talents, he was a skilled carpenter and in his younger years had many building projects on the go, he loved fishing with his sons and enjoyed being on the water. He ensured that his children experienced his values and traditions with summer trips to Europe, visiting relatives and adventuring the beautiful countryside that was once home to him. He was happiest in the company of family and friends, sharing a great meal together with flavours from the old country. Michael was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Maria and his sisters, Maria and Anna. He is survived and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Regina; daughter Karen, sons, Michael (Amanda) of Vancouver, and Ronald of Vancouver; brother Hans Zikeli (Margot) of Germany, sister-in-law Anna Orend of Germany and brother-in-law Hans Bening (Morika) of Germany; grandpets Mr. Marlowe, Indigo and Callebaut; cousins, nieces and nephews and the young children in his life who knew him as Opa.' The family would like to thank the doctor's and staff at Victoria General Hospital for their compassionate care. Funeral Services will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., on Friday, April 20 at 12:30 p.m. Honorary Pallbearers will be Adolf Schell and Julius Waedt. Interment will follow the reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association of Manitoba, 629 McDermot Ave. Winnipeg, MB R3A 1P6 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Suite 200, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
