DONALD KENNETH COMPTON (DON) On April 17, 2007, Donald Kenneth Compton (Don), marriage and life partner of Adel Hazel Compton (Curry), and walking partner to the family pet Happy , died suddenly at St. Boniface Hospital. A committed dependable life-affirming person with great strength of spirit, Don is greatly missed by Adel, their three children, Kris (Cher), Carla and Hannah, his sister Barb (Don) Scharf, brother Mel (Vi) Compton, sister-in-law Trudy Curry, brother-in-law Lane (Krista) Curry, father-in-law Larry Curry, nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family who smiled for Don to take their pictures at many family gatherings. He is also missed by co-workers and residents at East-Gate Lodge, Beausejour. A good citizen, Don served in many volunteer and elected positions for church and community in Manitou, Manitoba while also working in family business enterprises: D. K. Compton Sons Ltd., Compton Agro, and Curry Bros. Ltd. Accompanying Adel through seminary education and ministry, gave less spare time for Don to participate in extracurricular community activities. The main focus became work, family responsibilities, and volunteering through the local church(es) where Adel served. Don managed well in returning to his electrician trade, assuming new roles, and upgrading education. He worked at Crestline Coach in Saskatoon, Northern Electric in Meadow Lake, Ward's Electric in Yorkton, willingly cared for the children, did the laundry, the grocery shopping and chaperoning, completed his Power Engineering (boiler certificate) and most recently a Health Care Aide Certificate Course before beginning work at Eastgate Lodge. Don adapted to do whatever was needed to provide support and encouragement for Adel in reaching for her dream of a vocation in ministry in The United Church of Canada while raising three children and encouraging them in their education. He did this while reaching for his own dream for a healthier body. This required focus and discipline including daily walking, regular exercise, and good food management choices, eventually becoming vegetarian. Don enthusiastically shared his discoveries for health and well-being with family and friends. With stimulation from CBC news reports and politics, Don kept his mind active and ready for good mealtime conversation and lively debate. Some CBC favourite programs included the Air Farce and Vinyl Café. Don was born January 3, 1950 to Ken and Edna Compton in Morden, Manitoba. He married Adel Curry February 14, 1975. He was predeceased by his parents, his mother-in-law Everyne Curry, and his stepmother, Jean Compton. A memorial service for Don will be held Saturday, April 21, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Stonewall United Church in Stonewall, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to support the work of The United Church of Canada Mission and Service Fund, The Dr. Jessie Saulteaux Resource Centre (Beausejour), East Gate Lodge, Beausejour or a charity of choice. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Adele, Kris, Carla and Hannah -We were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Don. It is difficult to express how although we rarely crossed paths physically, your family often passed through our thoughts and conversations. Coming from the same rural background and then having our 'kids' connect through church activities made for easy sharing of stories, support and laughter. Please know that you are in our thoughts as we reflect on our own memories of Don as neighbour, businessman, friend, husband and father. May God comfort each one of you. With deepest care, Garnet, Nancy, Kevin and Chantal Moloney - Posted by: Garnet/Nancy Moloney (Friend) on: Apr 23, 2007
