After going through turbulent times during the Second World War, and seeking a better life for their family, Gretel and Herbert along with their two children, immigrated to Canada in 1952. Upon their arrival in Winnipeg, the family became members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where she was a lifelong member. Gretel found employment at the General Hospital sewing room where she quickly picked up the English language. Gretel was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a dear friend to all who knew her. When Gretel and Herbert retired in 1973, they moved out to Moosehorn, MB where they enjoyed five wonderful years. She loved when the children and grandchildren would come and visit. A lot of happy memories came from those years. Before her eyesight started failing, Gretel enjoyed many of her hobbies like embroidery, crocheting, and knitting afghans for her family and friends. Sunday dinners and coffee klatsches were also a highlight for her. She enjoyed getting together for dinner, sharing jokes and spending time with the grand-children. Gretel, although getting older, was thrilled to become Omi Omi She lived to see nine beautiful great-grandchildren. She cherished all of her family and friends and had a special place in her heart for all of them. We thank all of you who took time to visit her at Donwood Manor Personal Care Home these past three years. It meant a lot to her. A special thank you to Dr. Raymond Martens, and the staff at Donwood for their gracious care to Gretel during her stay.
