Date of Passing: Apr 19, 2007
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOROTHY LYONS (nee WEBSTER) Dorothy passed away peacefully in the early morning of April 19, 2007 at the Grace Hospital with her family at her side. Predeceased by her husband Bob Lyons; (1979) her parents, Timothy and Edith Webster; sisters, Edith Lawrence, Lil McMillan; brothers, Tim, Jack and George. She is survived by her daughter Joan Lyons (Chris Simcoe); her sister Margaret Thorkelsson; and sister-in-law Dorothy Webster. Dorothy was born on September 5, 1917, the fifth child of seven. She grew up on the farm near Ashern, MB, but she never did manage to stay on a horse. In 1937 she moved to Winnipeg to attend St. Boniface Nursing School. She graduated in 1940 and with her classmates celebrated their 65th Anniversary with a reunion in 2005. Dorothy spent the majority of her working years at Deer Lodge Veterans hospital retiring in 1974 as supervisor of the Central Supply Room. While nursing there she met and fell in love with a patient, Bob Lyons. They were married on February 22, 1946. After weathering the 1950 flood in a second floor downtown apartment, they sought refuge in the higher ground of St. James. In 1951 they bought their first and only house on Whytewold Road. Their daughter Joan was lovingly raised in this home and Dorothy remained there until May 2005. At that time she chose to move to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence where she thoroughly enjoyed her newfound freedom. Dorothy was renowned for her garden at Whytewold Road. She was looking forward to another season of golfing at John Blumberg. In 2000, as a 5-pin bowler she represented Manitoba at the Club 55+ Triples Team National Championship in Moose Jaw, SK. It was only recently that she gave up bowling. She loved watching golf and curling on TV, and always completed the daily crossword and jumble in the Free Press. Dorothy took every opportunity to enjoy visiting with her friends and family. She was well known for her sense of humour, and could be counted on to have a joke or two for every occasion. The family would like to thank everyone at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence, and the nursing staff at Grace Hospital for all their extra special care and concern during this last week. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave with a reception to follow. Memorial donation may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Dorothy made friends wherever she went, throughout her life. Yesterday is history Tomorrow is a mystery Today is a gift That's why it is called the present. Arrangements entrusted to: Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 885-9715
