BRIAN GEORGE SORENSEN March 10th 1962- April 25th 2007 Suddenly and peacefully on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at the age of 45 years, Brian George Sorensen passed away and left his family far too soon. Remaining to forever cherish Brian's memory are his beloved wife Deborah (Dede) DeRidder; their son Matthew DeRidder; his parents Mary and Alfred Sorensen; his brother Tim Sorensen (Evelyn); as well as his family of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and in-laws. Born in North York Township, outside of Toronto, Ontario on March 10 1962, he spent his early years in eastern Canada, living in Quebec and New Brunswick while his father served in the armed forces. Later in 1980, Brian and his parents would relocate and settle in Winnipeg. Dede and Brian met on his twentieth birthday. Although they both worked at the long gone Chi-Chi's Mexican Restaurant they didn't meet there and instead had met when a few co-workers decided to go for an after shift drink at the now defunct Sir John's in the old Polo Park Shopping Centre. He would later state that Dede was the best part of Winnipeg. Their son Matthew was born on October 8, 1983. Brian and Dede would later marry each other on April 3, 1998. Brian loved his cats, Tigger, Max, Gizmo and Ollie who always knew that Sunday was treat day and he would line them up in a row to divvy out their snacks. Brian's favourite past times would include golfing, fishing and playing computer games and watching hockey especially his favourite team the Montreal Canadiens. But mostly he enjoyed just spending his evenings after work with Dede. A typical Saturday night would be the two of them with a bowl of popcorn watching a movie together. In November of 1995 Brian was diagnosed with advance cancer of the larynx. He had major reconstructive surgery. Brian battled intensive radiation procedures but like the fighter he was he pulled through and beat cancer. Sadly, Brian's remission from cancer would be short lived and eleven years later in November of 2006 the disease would once again attack him. Brian tried to beat it a second time but this time the cancer was stronger and more aggressive and on the night of Wednesday, April 25, 2007 after a short hospital stay Brian would succumb to it surrounded by Dede and family when the end came. In compliance with Brian's wishes, a private family funeral service will be held. Dede and family would like to thank Dr. Maksymiuk, Dr. Kerr and Candice Meyers and the staff of CancerCare of Manitoba, also the nursing staff of Health Sciences Centre for their compassion and understanding during these troubling times. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Brian's memory to Cancer Care of Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9. Brian, although the Lord has called you to leave us far too soon you will live in our hearts forever and we will carry your spirit with us wherever we may go. Words cannot express the sorrow that we feel but we take consolation in that the pain and suffering that you endured as you fought this horrible disease is over for you.
