ELAINE OWEN (nee NAUGLER) I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. (John 5:24) Death has been swallowed up in victory. (1 Corinthians 15:54) On April 28, 2007 Elaine Owen was released from her earthly body to be with Jesus. She was 86 years young at heart and will be missed by her family and many friends. Elaine had an optimistic outlook, always looking for the best in people and sharing a cheery word. Elaine was born in West Gore, NS, and grew up surrounded by a large extended family with whom she kept in touch her whole life. She moved to Halifax where she met Albert Owen, a young naval petty officer from Edmonton. The couple was married in Edmonton on November 9, 1946. Sixty years later, on November 11, 2006, Elaine and Al celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in Winnipeg with many friends and family members. Elaine enjoyed reading, art and crossword puzzles, but most of all she loved people. Elaine is survived by her husband Al (Albert) of Winnipeg; her sister Doris Hindal of Stavanger, Norway; her daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Gordon Baker of Edmonton; grandchildren, Andrew Baker of Winnipeg, Ainsley (Brent) Thesen of Calgary, Allister Baker and fiancée Melissa Mannerfeldt, Adrianne and fiancé Jason Waithe, and Alyssa Baker, all of Edmonton; plus brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews across Canada, the United States and Norway. Elaine is also survived by her many adopted' children and grandchildren from the Filipino community, whom she loved as dearly as her biological family. Elaine will also be missed by her long-time community neighbours, members of Broadway Disciples United Church and the Christian Church (D of C) across Canada and the United States, friends at the Good Neighbours Seniors' Club, family and friends from Nova Scotia, and many others who knew and loved her. Elaine was predeceased by her brothers, Russell and Philip Naugler of Carlsbad, CA. A service to honour Elaine's life will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Broadway Disciples United Church, 396 Broadway Ave. (corner of Broadway and Kennedy next to the Legislature) in Winnipeg. Please feel free to wear brightly coloured clothing to this service, as Elaine loved bright colours, especially the colour red. If friends wish, donations may be made to Broadway Disciples United Church, CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or to a charity of one's choice. Condolences may be sent to alowen@shaw.ca or bakergl@shaw.ca. The family wishes to extend thanks to the members of Broadway Disciples United Church for their love and concern throughout the years and to the nursing staff in the I.C.U. at Concordia Hospital for their help and support during Elaine's time in their care.
