ELEANOR (LENA) ETHEL SETTEE (nee DISBROWE) Peacefully with family by her side, Eleanor Ethel (Lena) Settee passed away on Monday, April 30, 2007 at Victoria Hospital, Winnipeg, MB at the age of 89 years; beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, friend. Lena was born September 5, 1917 at the Hudson's Bay Post in Berens River, MB and lived there until her marriage to Leonard Settee on November 12, 1936 at Berens River, MB. They settled at Matheson Island, MB, where they raised their family and spent most of their married life before moving to Winnipeg in 1963. She is survived by her sons, Erland (Pat) Settee, Martin (Irene) Settee, Mervin Settee, Glenn (Lynette) Settee; daughters, Elsie Monkman, Pat (Ken) Thomas, Eleanor Prince, Stella (Dennis) Grove; special nephew Harold Disbrowe and his wife Rena; 30 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; her sister Elsie Monkman; sisters-in-law, Eva Disbrowe, Florence Wortman, Agnes Settee and Pauline Settee. She was predeceased by her husband Leonard George Settee in 1972; sons, Kenneth and Cecil in infancy; daughters, Maggie and her precious youngest, Geraldine; granddaughter Carly Settee and grandson Kenneth Settee; son-in-law Raymond Monkman; her parents, Frederick and Caroline (nee Berens) Disbrowe; 14 brothers and sisters. Throughout her life Mom worked hard raising her large family, enduring much hardship and sorrow with the loss of children, husband, siblings and friends. Through it all she was a tower of strength to her family; in times of grief she gave comfort and strength with the help of Dad, who also was always there for us all. Mom could always be counted on as a shoulder to lean on or as someone to go to in a crisis; she always knew what to do, and was never too tired to go to whoever needed her. She cherished her grandchildren and great- grandchildren when they came along, and they loved going to Granny's. She was happy to welcome her first great-great-grandchild Angel, just a few months before her passing. Her dream of being independent and staying in her own home until the end was realized. Mom worked at several jobs outside the home including cooking for fishermen, nurse's aide at St. Vital Hospital (now St. Amant Centre) and teacher's aide with the Winnipeg School Division. She retired in 1979 and spent time doing her crafts, reading, doing crosswords and gardening at her favorite summer retreat, back home at Matheson Island. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Greg Monkman, Roger Thomas, Rod Prince, Sean Settee, Glenn Grove and Ryan Settee. Honourary pallbearers will be her other grandsons: Carman, Kevin, Jonathon, Clifford and Christopher Settee, Rob Thomas, Timothy Settee-McKay. Special thanks to the nursing staff of the 4th floor Victoria Hospital for their great care during Mom's illness and to Rev. Phyllis Keeper for her love and kindness to Mom as well as her spiritual support to the family over the years. Prayers will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St. with Lorraine Demchuk officiating. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 4, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. in St Mark's Anglican Church, 19 St Mark's Place (off St. Mary's Rd), Winnipeg, MB with Rev. Ian Peterson officiating. Interment will follow in St. Vital Cemetery. There will be viewing during the evening prayer service; casket will be closed for the funeral service. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I am so sad for the loss to your family of your mom. Nothing can express how I feel. She was loved by all and had a special place in my heart. I would appreciate someone from the family emailing me. I lost all my Manitoba contacts emails when my computer crashed. Hugs to you all from Birdie. - Posted by: Eileen Monkman Hamilton (Neice) on: Feb 11, 2014
