GERALD WAYNE GOVEREAU December 3, 1958 May 4, 2007 There are no words to express how we feel about the loss of our brother, uncle, nephew and friend. Wayne died peacefully with his loving family at his bedside, after a brief bout with cancer. Wayne was predeceased by parents Anna and Theodore; great-niece Leslie and numerous relatives. He leaves to mourn siblings Theresa/Terri (Dave) Kirkness, Irene, Ted (Pam), Dennis (Lorna), Gale (Bob), Angie (Sonny), and Ken (Debbie); nieces and nephews Cameron (Francine), Naomi, Marie (Mitch), Theo (Chandi), Bronson (Becky), Courtney (Murray), David, Robert, Kent, Carmelle, Kathryn, Wilfred, and Jason (Julie). Wayne grew up in Fisher Bay, attended local schools, graduating from Fisher Branch. He went on to attend UofM obtaining his BSW. He began his career with Southeast Child and Family Services. Wayne then became Manitoba's Native Services Coordinator, and then spent two years working with the governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Wayne was privileged to be appointed the first Children's Advocate of Manitoba. When this term was up, he joined INAC before moving to Iqaluit, Nunavut as Executive Director of Population Health, Health and Social Services. Wayne was always the voice for children's rights and was never afraid to venture into unknown territories. He joined/worked in many newly formed organizations, government positions and the Nunavut Territory. The family thanks the Selkirk General Hospital, the Health Sciences Centre, Nunavut Health Services, and Winnipeg/Interlake Regional Health Authority for their help in caring for Wayne in his last days. In lieu of prayers, the family is hosting a traditional fire in Wayne's memory for family, friends, and colleagues at 29 Bunns Road, St. Clements, off highway 204. Wayne's last request is for everyone to pray for world peace. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 7 in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, MB. Interment will follow in the St. Clements Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or the Children's Hospital.
