LAURENA DAISY WILSON With profound sadness we regret to announce the passing of our beloved Laurena Daisy Wilson (Locke) Thursday evening, May 3, 2007 at the Selkirk General Hospital. Laurena, aged 64, passed peacefully after spending her last hours in the company of her husband, children and her sister Marlene and family (Peter and niece Laura). Laurena is survived by her husband of 46 years, Paul H. Wilson, and her mother Dorothy Locke, sister Marlene Friesen and brother Mervyn Locke. Laurena's children are Paul Wilson, Michael Wilson, Susan Wilson, and Lynn Friesen. Laurena greatly enjoyed the company of all of her grandchildren: Kathryn, Shannon, Allison, Samantha, Joshua, Evan, Ellen, and Jesse. The world is poorer with the loss of this beautiful and elegant lady who brought laughter, debate, style and grace to all our lives. Born in Winnipeg, August 4, 1942 to Lloyd Locke and Dorothy Locke (Forsey), Laurena at a young age always gave of herself to support her parents and family. Being actively involved in the Winnipeg Deaf community, some of our fondest family memories are of summers spent at Camp Kakepitay. Laurena married her husband December 16, 1960 in Winnipeg and moved with the armed forces to several locations including Chicoutimi Quebec and Chatham, New Brunswick. As a young couple, life was adventurous following a bush pilot's career. When returning to Winnipeg in 1965, Laurena worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia for a number of years and raised her family. She never lost her passion for travel. Enjoying life and culture, she was an artist and painter together with her group of numerous lifelong friends. As a patron of the arts, Laurena enjoyed the theatre, ballet, and opera. Laurena had many friends including those from the Selkirk PEO Chapter A. Part of their mission was to ensure that educational opportunities were provided for young women. As an advocate for the deaf retirement community, Laurena was an active member of the Board of the Deaf Centre Manitoba personal care home and worked to improve the lives of the disabled elderly. We give our thanks and appreciation to all the staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for their excellent care, and all the visitors who made her journey gentle and comfortable. For her neighbours who offered comfort, support, and love through these difficult times - we thank you. A memorial service will be held at the Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2007. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation in her name. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
