EUGENE J. (LEO) SOKOLYK August 23, 1936 - May 4, 2007 Eugene Sokolyk passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be sadly missed by his loving companion Zelma Clarke, of 29 years; his sons, Perry and fiancee Denise, Terry (Shirley); twin grandchildren, Johannes and Jewels; his two brothers, Bill (Janet) and family, and Nestor. He also leaves nephews, nieces, cousins and friends that will miss him. Eugene was happiest when he was with family. He always looked forward to visits from his grandchildren. Eugene was an avid bowler. His bowling skills were evident in the many trophies that he had achieved. He was predeceased by his wife Mary (1969); his parents, John (1975), and Anastasia (2003). He was born in Stuartburn, MB. Attended Beckett School, continuing at Stuartburn High School. He left the Stuartburn - Vita area in the late 1950s to seek employment. His first job took him to Field B.C. where he was employed in the forestry field for several years. Upon returning to Winnipeg he was employed by Midland Fruit Co., later renamed Codville. He enjoyed working for Codville because it gave him an opportunity to travel all over Manitoba and North Western Ontario. As a new adventure Eugene became a caretaker of an apartment block on Roslyn Road, along with Zelma, until his retirement in 2005. Together they enjoyed retirement on Aberdeen Avenue until he became ill. The family would like to thank the Palliative Care nurses and the doctors at the Health Sciences Centre for the care given to Eugene. Memorial Service will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg, MB Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. Family burial will take place in Stuartburn, MB at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Parish Cemetery.
