DR. W. IVAN JACKSON 1915 - 2007 It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Ivan Jackson after 92 years of life. Ivan passed in the early hours of May 9, 2007 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, predeceased in 1999 by his loving wife Marjorie of 57 years. He will be fondly remembered by his friend Shirley Nix. Ivan was born in Winnipeg, MB on August 15, 1915. After graduating from Kelvin High School, Ivan received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Minnesota in 1937. He continued his education with a year of postgraduate work at the University of Alberta, and began practicing dentistry in Winnipeg with his father, Dr. P.A. Jackson, in 1938. Ivan had a decorated tour of duty with the Armed Forces from 1941-1944, serving in Canada and the United Kingdom in the Canadian Dental Corps. Upon his return to Canada, Ivan resumed his Winnipeg practice in the Somerset Building and later in the Medical Arts, and was instrumental in starting The Tuxedo Dental Group in 1967. In 1958 Ivan received the prestigious honour of becoming a member of The American Academy of Restorative Dentistry. He volunteered his time to serve the dental profession and his colleagues at the local, provincial, and national level by holding positions with the Winnipeg Dental Society, The Manitoba Dental Society and the Canadian Council for Dental Education. Ivan lived life with a spirit of adventure, always seeking new experiences. Ivan loved sports and was a great all-round athlete, and excelled particularly at downhill skiing and Nordic ski jumping. He won many trophies as a skiing and jumping competitor, and later as a judge encouraged young people in the sport. He was thrilled to be able to pursue his love of skiing in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Ivan and Marj retired to Victoria in 1979. Ivan became a renowned gardener, and resumed his love of sailing in the waters around Victoria with many friends. Whether it was enjoying poetry, the theater, potting with clay, working at creative writing, or spending time with family and friends, Ivan infused each moment with his abundant energy, his love of life, and his gentle sense of humour. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Ivan is survived by his daughters, Alene (Whitlaw), Sharron (Man), and Deborah (Edwards), and two sisters, Marion (Carter), and Isabel (Conn), and many grandchildren. Donations in remembrance of Ivan may be made to: First Open Heart Society of BC, 2205 Shakespeare St., Victoria, BC V8R 4G2.
