Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTYLER BRETT VAN WYNSBERGHE On May 14, 2007 at Victoria General Hospital, Tyler was lost to us after a brief struggle with esophageal cancer. Born in Morris, Manitoba, on August 3, 1960, Tyler was the second of three children of Joyce and Walter Van Wynsberghe. In many ways a classic, middle child, he could be shy, quiet, and overlooked in the hubbub of more-rambunctious siblings and cousins. Indeed, it was his nature to worry that he was causing trouble for others even when the reverse was true. Still, Tyler surprised people with his determination. Always a sports fan, he was a member of the Acadia Junior High basketball team and the Fort Garry Lions bantam football team in the 1970s, and he wrote at least one letter to the editor of the Winnipeg Free Press, championing high-school hockey in the days when there was none. In 1982, he obtained a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Manitoba, with a major in psychology. In 2004, he unexpectedly provided one of the eulogies at the funeral of his beloved grandmother, Vera Rondeau. An amateur artist, he would make his own birthday cards for the young children of his sister Valerie, featuring cartoon characters adored by the kids. (A sampling of his artwork can be found at http://www.candlelightstories.com/Stories/ SlimHick1.htm and http://www.candlelightstories.com/ Stories/SlimHick2.htm.) Genealogy was another of his interests, and he mapped out generations of Van Wynsberghes, Rondeaus, Moores and Mitchells. Typically, Tyler played down all of this. It is a matter of regret that Tyler never raised a family of his own, because, as much as he would have denied it, he was ahead of many of the standards of today. Despite an amusing weakness for celebrity gossip, he was modest, unselfish, and devoted to his mother. He drank little, never smoked, and watched his weight. During a period when his parents' cottage was neglected, he volunteered to maintain it, without complaint. One of his last acts before he fell ill in late March was the painstaking removal of all the old wallpaper from the front hallway of his mother's home, which cleared the way for a tapestry that he helped select. Why he was taken so young will never be understood. Tyler was predeceased by his father (1995) and is survived by his mother, his brother Scott, his sister Valerie and brother-in-law Brad, his niece Hillary, and nephews Graham and Connor, all of the Winnipeg area. The survivors would like to express their appreciation of the efforts of the staffs of the Victoria General Hospital and CancerCare Manitoba, who did their very best in the face of impossible odds. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in Thomson In The Park Funeral Chapel, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, R3T 2E8 or CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, R3E 0V9.
