HANNA-HALYNA HOLOWKO Hanna-Halyna Holowko (nee Homenko) was born in Kryworiza, Ukraine on March 28, 1923, and sadly passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2007, at the age of 84 years. Predeceased by her beloved husband Alex, on September 17, 2006. During the Second World War, Halyna and her family lived in Germany. In 1949, she made the brave trip alone across the Atlantic, first stopping in Montreal to see if Canada would be a suitable place for her extended family. She found that life in Canada had more to offer than she had ever imagined and eagerly awaited the arrival of her mother, father, two brothers, and two sisters. In 1950, she settled in Winnipeg, where she married Alex Holowko and raised two sons, George and Alex. She worked for many years as a dedicated nurse at Misericordia Hospital where she welcomed many babies into the world in the maternity ward. She continued her loving care as a nurse by dedicating her life to her parents in their later years. She and her husband retired to Surrey in 1987 where she was able to enjoy the weather in British Columbia and take good care of her husband. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her five grandchildren, Matthew, Emily, Nicholas, Jamie, and Scott. Halyna took great pride in her Ukrainian heritage and took great care in passing many traditions onto her children and grandchildren, including the language, art, and music of her homeland. Halyna was blessed with the singing voice of an angel and was a long-standing member of her church choir in Winnipeg. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends and will remain in their hearts forever. Prayers will be held Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. at Avalon Surrey Funeral Home 13288 108 Avenue, Surrey, BC. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Mary, 10765135A Street, Surrey, BC. Reception to follow.
