KENNETH WILLIAM HAYNES 1916 2007 Ken Haynes passed away peacefully, on May 18, 2007 at the age of 90. Ken was predeceased by Shirley, his wife of 53 years; his brother Jack; and sisters, Jean and Doris, all of Calgary. He will be lovingly remembered by his five children, Lary, Doug, Glen (Tracy), Sheila (John), and Ian (JoAnn); grandchildren, Lori (Ray), Katie, Tara, and Eric, Morgan, Madelaine and Julian, Hayley and Robyn, great-grandchildren, Jayde and Teale; brother Gordon (Florence); and sister Laura (Bill), both of Calgary; sister-in-law Mickey (Clyde) of Selkirk and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ken was born in Cabri, Saskatchewan and spent his youth as a farm boy on the prairies. He often shared stories of racing across open prairie on horseback, working with neighboring farmers at threshing time, and the many escapades with his younger siblings, particularly his brother Gordon, 15 months his junior. He served in the Canadian Air Force during Second World War repairing aircraft engines. While stationed in Winnipeg he met his future wife, Shirley, and they married in 1946 in Calgary. Their early years of marriage were spent in Calgary and Red Deer, Alberta. Ken's early employment as a Wearever salesman allowed him to hone his skills as the world's best pancake-maker and chief consultant to his wife regarding the cooking of the Sunday dinner roast. Following this period, he began a long and successful career in barbering which brought him to The Pas, Manitoba in the mid 1950s, where he opened Ken's Barber Shop. During their years in The Pas Ken and Shirley made many wonderful friends through their involvement in Westminster United Church and a variety of community activities. Dad taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and served many years on various church board committees. Ken was also a long-time faithful member of the Masonic Lodge. During his membership he held various positions in all aspects of the chapter. In later years, he also joined Shirley as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge. In his spare time, Ken could almost always be found at Ken's Corner , a piece of farmland along the Carrot River just four miles west of The Pas. He shared a love of farming with his father-in-law, Fred Kerr, and over the years they spent endless hours raising horses and livestock, and tending to abundant gardens which they took much pleasure in sharing with family and friends. Although dad's heart was always in farming, he did provide the family with a summer cottage at Clearwater Lake, 17 miles north of The Pas. Family and friends spent the summer months swimming, boating, and enjoying summer activities at this beautiful spot. After 40 odd years in The Pas, Ken and Shirley moved to Selkirk, MB. They enjoyed several years there, continuing to be involved in community activities and making new friends, while also being close to their grown children and families. Their final move as a couple was into Winnipeg in the mid 90s. Following Shirley's passing in 2000, Ken moved to Rosewood Village and then into the Poseidon Care Center, where he resided until his passing. A celebration of Ken's life will be held on May 23, 1:00 p.m. at Harrow United Church on the corner of Harrow and Mulvey in Winnipeg. Visitation will take place between 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. Cropo Funeral Chapel 586-8044
