Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMIKE YURKIW 1922 - 2007 After 84 years on this earth, Mike Yurkiw was called back to his Creator on Saturday, May 19, 2007. Predeceased by his loving wife, Janina, he is survived by sons, Steve and John, daughter-in-law Nikki, and granddaughter Haley, as well as family across Canada and in Ukraine. Dad was born in Selo Jaseniw, Ukraine, on July 6, 1922. After the Second World War, he found himself in England where he was able to nurture his love of plants and gardening by working in a greenhouse. His family in Canada sponsored him to come live in Manitoba, and in 1951, he sailed across the Atlantic to start a new life in yet another new country. While working in Moss Spur, he was introduced to Janina Slowik through mutual friends. They married in 1962 and set up their home and started their family in Winnipeg. To be closer to his new family, he found employment in the Department of Agriculture Economics at the University of Manitoba, where he worked until his retirement in 1987. Dad was happiest when at home. His love of gardening was evident in the way he could make any plant grow as well as being able to produce the tastiest tomatoes in the neighbourhood. He also enjoyed puttering around the home, keeping every room freshly painted and making minor repairs. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with Haley, who was the joy of his life, as well as showering her with lots of chocolates. The family would like to express its gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Ward 3 South at Grace Hospital for the outstanding dedication and care they provided throughout dad's stay. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Ghost Parish, 341 Selkirk Avenue, Winnipeg with an Oblate Father as Celebrant. Interment to follow in Holy Ghost Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Holy Ghost Parish Maintenance Fund.
