AMIR AHSAN MB, BS, FRCS(C) It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Amir Ahsan on May 22, 2007. Amir, the oldest son of Syed Mahmood Ahmed and Hasina Khatoon was born in Bharatpur, Bengal, India, on February 1, 1933. During the partition of India, his family immigrated to East Pakistan where he completed high school, pre-medical and medical studies, graduating from Dhaka Medical College in 1956. Following internship, Amir moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he completed internship and one year surgical residency. In 1960 he was admitted to the Diploma Program in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Manitoba. Upon completion of this, he obtained both Certification and Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He practiced in Winnipeg since 1964, with a special interest in Joint Replacement. The patients who passed through his hands were fortunate that they had a surgeon for whom their well being meant everything and who continually kept abreast of the newest and best techniques in his profession. Amir was a longtime member of the Manitoba Orthopaedic Society, The Canadian Orthopaedic Association, the Canadian Medical Association, and the Manitoba Medical Association. He served on the Active Staffs of both St. Boniface and Concordia Hospital. Until recently he was a member of the teaching staff of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Manitoba. Amir enjoyed clinical teaching and took great pride in the medical students who attended his clinics. He also volunteered his time and skill to CARE Medico in Third World countries. Outside of his profession, Amir was an enthusiastic indoor and outdoor gardener. Amir was generous to all who needed his help. He was a founding Trustee of the Syed Mahmood Ahmed Educational Trust Fund, and was one of three founding Trustees of the Manitoba Islamic Association, and was active in building the Hazelwood Mosque in Winnipeg. He took great pride in both his Bengali culture and Canadian citizenship. Amir is survived by his wife Airdrie; a son, Jamil Ahsan of Winnipeg; and a daughter Dr. Maryam Ahsan of Chicago; two sisters in Bangladesh; and numerous nieces and nephews in Bangladesh and Australia. The family wishes to thank the team who cared for Amir, at Riverview Centre, and the many friends who gathered in support. The funeral prayers will be held at the Grand Mosque, 2445 Waverley Street, at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2007, with burial at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should you wish, a contribution to Doctors Without Borders or a charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated.
