WILLIAM ALBERT (BERT) WHITEMAN William Albert Whiteman (Bert) passed away in his suite at Lions Place on Wednesday, May 23, 2007. Bert was born May 21, 1925, in Russell, MB, to Florence (Dennie) Whiteman and Robert Whiteman. He had one brother Robert Lewis. When Bert was a young boy, the family moved to Winnipeg to pursue Bert's musical talents. Although sight-impaired, he built a successful life around music. He received his L.M.M. from the University of Manitoba, teaching certificate from the Royal Schools of Music and attended Juilliard School of Music. He was a winner of the Rose Bowl. He sang on the Prairie Schooner back in the days of live Radio and held the position of Soloist with the Riverview United Church for years. His affiliation with the Choir and congregation at Riverview United was very meaningful for him. Bert taught Music for years in the Riverview area before retiring and moving into Lions Place. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the other residents and loved to sing at the Sunday Hymn Sing. Bert was a long-standing member of the Lion's Club of Manitoba. The family wishes to thank all of Bert's care givers and the staff of Lions Place for their care and assistance over the past few years. On the 21st family and friends joined Bert to celebrate his 82nd birthday. He enjoyed the opportunity to express his feelings for us. We are so thankful that we had this last opportunity to show him our love and respect. Bert was a kind man who demanded little of life but was always genuinely thankful for what life offered him. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Ave. Remembrance's may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, ON1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Ave., or CNIB, 1080 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3G 3M3, in William's memory.
