Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDORIS EILEEN GALLAGHER Doris Eileen Gallagher (nee McKay), born March 21, 1925, passed away at Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg after a mercifully short illness on Wednesday, May 23, 2007. Doris is survived by her husband of 60 years, Glen; three sons, Larry (Cairns, Australia), Neil (Winnipeg) and Ken (Bonnyville, AB) and their wives Barbara, Terri and Mary; nine grand-children, Scott, Erin, Shelley, Jessica, Kelly, Tim, Glenn, Kaatrina and Anneke; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Flynn; and three sisters, Hope, Marion and Wilma. She was predeceased by father Fred, mother Edna and brother Marvin. Born in Anerley, Saskatchewan, Doris spent her childhood on the family farm and later moved to Saskatoon. There she trained as a teacher and was eventually posted to Bradwell, Saskatchewan where she met Glen, marrying him in January 1947. Glen worked for many years on the CNR and he and Doris lived in several small towns in Saskatchewan including Glenbush and Rabbit Lake, before moving to Saskatoon in 1961. Doris returned to teaching in Rabbit Lake and later taught in elementary schools in Saskatoon and Winnipeg. In 1980 Doris and Glen moved to British Columbia, living in North Delta before settling at Glenwood Village in Surrey in 1987. They lived happily amongst friends at Glenwood until 2005 when failing health required them to move to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence in Winnipeg. Doris was a dedicated teacher and taught across the elementary years. She began her career in a one-teacher school teaching Grade 1 - 10, and her work in later years was with students who had reading difficulties. She was a willing community member and participated actively as a volunteer with many groups, including serving as a volunteer at Expo 86 in Vancouver. She was active in the Newcomers club in BC and she enjoyed the company of friends made there. They were her partners at whist and bridge. She curled for many years both on the prairies and later on the coast. She enjoyed travelling and reading. Her family fondly recalls her baking skills. Her butter tarts were the stuff of legend and were second to none. Most importantly, she was the focal point around which her family moved. Her strength, determination and love provided HOME for her husband and sons no matter where their adventures and activities took them. Her grandchildren adored her and she them. Doris will be sadly missed by her family which is now spread from England to New Zealand and Australia. However, her loving spirit will live on within all of them and her smiles will not be forgotten. The family would like to thank Deer Lodge Rehabilitation Centre for providing care during Doris' final days. A family memorial service will be at a later date. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Winnipeg, Unit 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 4G2, in Doris' memory. Arrangements entrusted to: Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 885-9715
