ANNE ROBERTS Anne Roberts died peacefully on Thursday, May 24, 2007, not long after her 83rd birthday. Born Anne Bailey Williams in Newtown, Wales, on May 9, 1924, she was predeceased by her husband Howard Roberts in 1989, and by her parents, William Williams and Anne Jane Bailey and by her sister Ceridwen Hobart. Nan is survived by her son David Roberts (Mary Barg); grandsons, Dylan, Julian and Bailey; her son Peter Roberts (Anne) and grandson Evan, all of Winnipeg, and her sister Menai Redfern, in Lymington, Hampshire, UK. Nan married Howard in Caernarfon, North Wales, in 1952. Nan and Howard came to Canada in 1956 and lived in Toronto. They moved to Regina in 1959 and finally settled in Winnipeg in 1967. She was a loving, vibrant and generous person who brought a positive attitude to everything in life. She was spontaneous and always open to life's new adventures. A playful spirit, she delighted in making people laugh. She adored her grandsons. The treat cupboard was never empty. She trained in nursing in Britain and worked for both the Saskatchewan Department of Health and the Manitoba Health Services Commission. After retirement Nan became a happy traveller, with trips to the UK, Portugal, Hawaii, Arizona, Mexico, Florida, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore - and Gimli! She travelled several times to the annual Welsh singing festival, the Gymanfa Ganu. Nan loved to play cards with anyone who was prepared to take her on. She remained active in retirement: exercising at the Reh-Fit Centre, line-dancing, bowling and golfing. She was very modest about shooting a Hole-in-One at age 75. She also worked tirelessly fundraising and volunteering for many causes. These included the Arthritis Society, The Diabetes Association, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Kidney Foundation, The Canadian Cancer Society, YM-YWCA Widows Club, Rick Hanson Foundation for Spinal Cord Research. Nan gave greatly of her love and will be dearly missed by her family, by her many, many friends, and by all who knew her and were touched by her. Her family offers deep gratitude to every one of the wonderful staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge who gave Nan such loving care in the past two years. Donations can be made in Anne's memory to any of the above causes. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 28, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with a private family interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
