MARTHA (MATTIE) RICHARDSON COWIE (nee ARCHIBALD) Mattie Cowie passed away on Friday, May 25, 2007, at the age of 93 at Fred Douglas Lodge where she has resided for the last few years. Mattie is survived by her three grandchildren, Kimberly, Bobby and Andrew; and two great-grandchildren, Analeigh and Connor. She is survived by her son-in-law David and relatives in Scotland. Mattie is also survived by her close friends, Ellen Adams and her four daughters, and Geoff and Kathleen Moore. Mattie was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1961; her daughter-in-law Margaret in 1994; and sadly, both of her children, Robert and Eadie in 2001. Mattie was born in Clydebank, Scotland, on October 18, 1913, and was married to Robert Cowie in March 1937. In her long life, she lived through two world wars, became a widow at a very young age and packed up all her belongings and made a new start in Canada to be with her family. Mattie was a hard worker, whether it was keeping the house shining or ironing anything she could get her hands on. She was employed at the Health Sciences Centre for many years, working with the senior patients, a job into which she put her heart and soul and retired at 65 years of age. In her retirement, she enjoyed being a significant part in her grandchildren's lives and also loved her faithful canine companions that kept her company throughout her days. Her favourite times in her later years were spent at the cottage at Laclu. She enjoyed peaceful evenings on the deck or fun-filled parties with the friends from around the lake. Mattie was known as Granny to everyone, young and old. Mattie was a feisty and proud Scottish woman who loved telling stories of her life back hame in Scotland but also embraced her life in Canada with joy. In 2001, after the tragic loss of her only children Robert and Eadie, her descent into the world of Alzheimer's began to change the essence of the person whom we all knew and loved. So now she is gone from us, her suffering is over, the fight is done. Her mind is hers again and she has been re-united with her husband and her two children. Rest in Peace, Dear Mattie, we are so honoured that you were our Grandma. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Fred Douglas Lodge, 1275 Burrows Ave., Winnipeg. If friends desire, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to CancerCare Manitoba. Arrangements entrusted to: Glen Eden Funeral Home 4477 Main Street 338-7111
