LENA SHYMKIW Peacefully, surrounded by her family, Mom passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at the Seven Oaks Hospital, aged 91 years. Mom was born on January 6, 1916 in St. Norbert (Howden, MB). She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Eleanor, Ron and Geraldine Zolinski; her three grandchildren, Nicole (fiance Robert Montgomery), Heather (fiance Jeff Rotinsky) and Robert Zolinski; sister Stella Andrechuk; brother-in-law Harold Deckert; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Nick, on January 8, 1996; her parents Anna and William Melnyk; sisters, Olga Deckert and Jean Gerylo; brother Frank Melnyk, step-sister Mary; step-brothers, Nester, Stanley, Peter and Michael Besko. Lena had a great love for gardening, cooking and needlework, all of which she excelled in. She was a loving, caring and generous woman whose greatest joy was her family especially her grandchildren. She was a lifetime member of St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church, in which she found tremendous faith in God. Mom loved life and during her working years, she enjoyed gardening for Ed Patterson's Garden Centre in Headingley during the garden seasons. During winter, she sweetened our lives by working at the Progress Candy Factory. She acted as Chambermaid for her brother's hotel, the Dufferin Hotel, and then she cooked and prepared food at The Bay's Paddlewheel Restaurant, retiring at this point in life to cherish her grandchildren. Prayers will be sung at 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 8 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 9 at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 160 Euclid Ave. with Very Rev. Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. officiating. Interment to follow in Holy Family Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold Deckert, Ted Besko, Bill Woychuk and John Shymkiw.
