PAUL HUDYMA (HAINES) January 24, 1924 - February 5, 2007 Beloved Father, Grandfather and Uncle Paul Hudyma (Haines). . . . last of four sons born to Ukrainian immigrant parents Peter and Euphrosyna. The Hudymas became established in the Springfield Municipality as a founding family in the 1920s. In addition to the country store (which was the communication centre for the community), gas station, feed lot, mink ranch and farm, they helped build and establish a grade school, hire qualified teachers and raise the standard of education in that region. Paul was one of the first to graduate with a high school degree from the school and the first student from the region to attend the University of Manitoba for two years in the School of Architecture, until he was drafted into the Canadian army during the Second World War. He was sent to the North West Territories as a cartographer and travelled by dog team to help chart the Hudson Bay. At that time he excelled as a boxer in the Army as well as a cartoonist for the Army Newspaper. During the end of his tour he married Elizabeth Kupchuk on September 29, 1945, and became a policeman in Winnipeg for 16 years. After five years of marriage, their only child Paula was born. Paul moved his family in 1964 to Los Angeles, California, and at this time changed the family name to Haines for communication convenience. He became a supervisor for the Insurance Company of North America and excelled as the overall insurance director for Disneyland, specializing in legal negotiations and seminars. He retired and after the death of his wife, he moved to Leesburg, Virginia, in 1990 to be with his only surviving daughter Paula and granddaughter Olivia until his death on February 5, 2007. We miss you very much Dad, Grandpa and Uncle. Paula and Olivia will be bringing his remains to the Ukrainian National Cemetery on Lorne Hill Road in Springfield, Manitoba. The service will be on June 14, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. Reception will follow at the home of Virginia and Allan Snyder. For further information and directions please call 204-257-7123. (Paula can be contacted prior to June 12 at 703-777-9225).
