FREDERICK STEWART SCANES 1926 - 2007 After a brief and courageous battle, Fred passed away peacefully with his cherished family at his side on June 11, 2007. Fred was the devoted husband of Jackie, the love of his life and beautiful bride of 45 years. He was in his 82nd year. Affectionately known as Freddy by his friends, he was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1926. At six years old he became a professional dancer and vaudeville performer who toured across the U.S and Canada. As a young adolescent he joined the Merchant Navy in 1941 to defend his country during the Second World War. He survived being shot, being rescued from frigid North Atlantic waters, his ship being torpedoed as well as many other near death experiences. However, he said his biggest survival techniques involved surviving four teenager daughters, whom he adored. At the end of his Second World War service, still in his early 20s, Fred headed south to experience the warm weather and adventure that Miami offered. His first job, as a lifeguard at the Fontainebleau Beach Club in Miami, was his first opportunity to recapture some of his lost youth. His infectious sense of humour and magnetic charm drew people to him from all walks of life. He returned to Winnipeg in the 1950s where he met and married the elegant Jackie Dalenger, his dance partner and sweetheart. With a flair for all things entrepreneurial, he founded and ran Maplewood Marketing until the family moved to Toronto in the 1990s. Fred was a natural at sales and marketing. He was a free spirit with a million dollar personality who left an imprint on all who came in contact with him. Fred will be dearly missed by his friends and family. Most of all, he will be lovingly remembered by his four daughters and their families: Sandy Reimer and her husband Jim; Wendy Reimer, her husband Ross and their two children, Alex and Riley; Kathryn Eve, her partner Shana Malinsky and their son Noah; Krissy Scanes, her husband Michael Nikiforuk and their son Elijah. Special thanks to Dr. George Strobele as well as the caring medical staff at Joseph Brant Hospital. God bless you all. Friends are invited to celebrate Fred's life at a memorial service on Friday, June, 22, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Chartwell Baptist Church at 228 Chartwell Rd., Oakville, ON (905-844-2801). In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Salvation Army as they held a special place in Fred's heart.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I just stumbled upon this and Jackie's notices. I was immediately flooded with many fond childhood memories of both of them and the entire Scanes' family. Although it's been many, many years I especially remember spending a Christmas Eve overnight with them where - spoiler alert! lol - late at night I was privileged to join Freddy in the eating of the cookies that were left out for Santa, leaving crumbs on the plate as evidence of his presence. As a small kid who had never experienced Christmas - we're Jewish - this was a very special moment for me, along with the fact that they were thoughtful enough to have presents for me to open that morning along with the rest of the family. I will always remember their kindness and generosity and laughter, lots of laughter. Albeit years late I extend my sincerest condolences to the family. May their memories be a blessing. - Posted by: Steve Schwartz (Friend ) on: Oct 06, 2023
