LEONARD EARLE (JOHN) SPENCE Peacefully, on Saturday, June 9, 2007, surrounded by his family, John passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, at the Grace Hospital, at the age of 73 years. Remaining to forever cherish John's memory are his beloved wife and soul mate of 48 years of marriage, Lois (nee Zass); son Greg (Kathy), granddaughters, Rebecca, Jasmin, Madison; daughter Shelly (Slade Phillips), granddaughters, Brittany and Jamie; brothers, Wayne, Keith, Ron; sisters, Lorraine and Irene; many nieces and nephews, good friends and comrades. He was predeceased by his father Harry; mother Laura Ethel (nee Scott), and brothers, Bev and Garry. Born September 5, 1933 in Greenridge, Manitoba, John served 26 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an aero engine technician and before officially retiring he worked at Belacres Golf Course and Lipsit Hall Curling Rink. John belonged to the Royal Legion St. James Branch #4. He loved nature, gardening, spent winters curling, summers at Tall Timber Lodge, cruising on the Big Red and fishing ( tight lines ). Back in the day, he enjoyed playing baseball and the guitar. John loved golfing, taking long walks where sometimes he would end up visiting his comrades. He could fix anything that was broken and if you needed something built he'd build it. John was the first one there if you needed a helping hand. Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his harem of granddaughters, swimming, singing, games, puzzles, barbecues and being at the lake with them. In compliance with John's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held and a private family service was held Monday evening at his home. The family would like to send a special thank you to the caring staff at Grace General Hospital, especially at Day Surgery and 3rd Floor. As well, a very special thank you to Dr. Harris, Gianna and Connie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9 or you may give blood, or plant a tree in John's memory.
