WILLIAM DANIEL MONKMAN On June 16, 2007, after a long struggle with illness, Dan's suffering here on the Mother Earth ended, and he moved on to join the Great Spirit. He his survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie; his children, Sandra (Fred) Maytwayashing, Adeline (Linden) Johnson, Noreen (Glen) Monkman, and Arthur (Lisa) Malcolm, 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, along with his large family of brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by his parents, Jerry and Louisa Monkman; his brothers, Norman and Jerry; sister Lillian; infant daughter Maureen and many in-laws. Dan met the love of his life, Marie Malcolm, of Ebb and Flow in 1951 at the tender age of 19. Together they settled in Dan's birthplace of Vogar, MB where they raised their family of four beautiful children. Dan was a very quiet and shy gentleman. He and his wife Marie instilled the values of hard work and integrity in their children on a daily basis with their ethics. Dan worked as a commercial fisherman on Lake Manitoba all of his life. Summer activities were devoted to working for local farmers, making miles of oak fence with an axe and a team of horses as the primary tools. All of this work was done with Marie and the children at his side. He was a well recognized baseball player (pitcher) for the Siglunes Loons. Many catchers were in fear when Dan was on the plate, as he had a reputation for a lightning quick fastball. Dan spent his social time with his best friends, Conrad Johnson, Cecil Spence and Pete and Francis Baptiste. Dan's primary focus was always his family. He and Marie worked so very hard to ensure that their children were always accommodated with their needs and wishes. The latter years were very special to Dan as he had the opportunity to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up in his presence. He enjoyed teasing and conversing with the little people of his family. Dan will always be respected and remembered by so many friends and family. His children and their families will always remember their soft spoken Grandpa for his kind and gentle demeanor. More importantly they will remember him for the sacred values that he taught them. They also know that Grandpa is not far away and he will be watching over them as they travel through life's journeys. Dan remarked to Marie on his final day that he could see a beautiful place in the sky. We will all meet again Dad, Grandpa and great friend. A Wake service will commence Friday evening at his residence. A celebration of Dan's life will be held at his residence on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Interment will follow in the Anglican Cemetery in Vogar, MB. Pallbearers will be Steven Malcolm, Alvin Malcolm, Glen Malcolm, Lornie Malcolm, Kenny Monkman and Geoffrey Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur Malcolm Sr., Andrew Malcolm, Gary Malcolm, Cecil Spence, Leslie Monkman and his brother Jimmy Monkman. The family would like to thank the Doctors, nurses and staff from the both the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital, and the St. Boniface Hospital. Thanks also to Arnason Funeral Home.
