DOROTHY E. DYCK Dorothy Esther Dyck passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital on Monday, June 18, 2007, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 84. She leaves to mourn her husband of 57 years, Edmond; daughter Judith; son John and his wife Dorothy, and grandchildren, Emily and Jacob. She also leaves her brothers-in-law, John and wife Florence, Walter and wife Margaret; sisters-in-law, Kathleen, Caryll, and Roberta, nieces and nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, John R. and Sara (Rempel) Wiebe, and her brothers-in-law, Harold, Victor, and David. Dorothy was born on December 23, 1922 in Winkler, Manitoba. As an only child, she helped her parents on the farm but had the freedom to explore the surrounding woods and countryside. She took her early schooling at Cheval and Burwalde schools. Following graduation from Winkler High School, she attended the Provincial Normal School and then embarked on a teaching career which ended with her retirement in 1984. She began teaching at Glencross, Burwalde, and Winkler. Following her marriage to Edmond in 1949, she taught in Winnipeg in the St. Vital School Division and at Lord Selkirk School. She also spent one memorable year as a cook at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College. Together with Ed, she also taught in Rosenfeld and Morris. In 1959, they returned to Winnipeg and in 1966, she resumed teaching, this time at Princess Margaret School where she enjoyed the remainder of her career as teacher-librarian. Dorothy furthered formal studies at M.B.B.C. and the University of Winnipeg. She read widely, particularly literature, local and Mennonite history, archaeology, cultural studies, and works on visual arts, and was an avid member of her book club. The family camped across North America, and she and Ed later travelled extensively - to Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East and Asia. Winter trips to Arizona gave her the opportunity to explore a new landscape and culture. Dorothy maintained a life-long interest in music, particularly playing the piano and singing. In retirement, Dorothy pursued her interest in art, developing her skills, while renewing old friendships and making new ones as a member of Manitoba Porcelain Artists. She also served her community with the Women's Auxiliary of Donwood Manor. Dorothy had deep roots in the Mennonite Brethren Church, being baptized together with her father in 1945. She spent over 40 years as a member of the River East congregation where she served in Sunday School, Pioneer Girls, women's fellowships, the library, and choir. The memorial service will take place on Monday, June 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the River East Mennonite Brethren Church preceded by the committal at the Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. A volunteer choir will meet at the church at 10:00 a.m. Viewing will take place Sunday, June 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street. Those who wish, may donate to the Edmond and Dorothy Dyck Scholarship in Education at the University of Winnipeg, to Donwood Manor, or to a charity of their choice.
