DOROTHY MILDRED ARMSTRONG December 13, 1914 May 11, 2007 Peacefully on May 11, 2007, Dorothy Armstrong passed away in her sleep. Her parents, Jesse and Herbert Walton; her sister Beatrice Olive Grant; her first husband Russell Douglas Smith, and her second husband Allan Armstrong all predeceased Dorothy. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Carole Small, George Grant, James Grant and Joyce MacLean, by her 10 grandnieces and nephews, and by a close network of extended family members who came to know and love her greatly. Dorothy lived and worked in Winnipeg all of her life. She met and married Russell (Pat) Smith in 1949. Pat died in 1953. Dorothy met and married Allan Armstrong in 1973 and spent many happy years with him until his death in 1985. She often spoke of how lucky she was to have shared her life with two such wonderful men. Dorothy's kindness, her keen sense of humour, her open and curious nature, and her generosity of spirit made her a much loved and respected friend of all who knew her. Her life-long passion for learning led her to experience life to the fullest. She traveled the world, not as a tourist, but to acquire an understanding of the lives of people in other countries and cultures. She read widely on matters of religion, philosophy, the humanities and history, and loved to discuss and explore diverse views and beliefs. She shared a love of chorale music with her father, a choirmaster and opera singer from England, with whom she sang at Holy Trinity Anglican Church for many years. She strongly supported all the arts, and was an early member of the Crafts Guild and a life-long patron of the Symphony and the Ballet. She contributed tirelessly and generously of her time and resources to the church, to the arts community and always to those in need. Dorothy's devotion to her husbands, friends and family was deep and unwavering. In addition to caring for both of her late husbands during their illnesses, Dorothy provided care and support to her parents late in their lives, and to her beloved sister, Betty, whom she moved from Calgary to Winnipeg so that they could be close during the last difficult years of Betty's life. While Dorothy was passionate about caring for the well being of others, she also loved to laugh and spend time with her friends and family. Her love of life was infectious and greatly enriched the lives of all who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered for these gifts. In accordance with Dorothy's wishes, her remains were interred on Friday, May 25, 2007 at St. John's Cathedral Cemetery in Winnipeg. Three passions have governed my life. The longings for love, the search for knowledge and the unbearable pity for the suffering of humankind.
