Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGLADYS REICHERT (nee WHITE) June 12, 1917 June 22, 2007 With much sadness and a sense of relief, the family announces the passing of Gladys Charlotte Reichert at Meadowood Manor after a long struggle with Alzheimer's and more recently cancer. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Carla Scaletta (Sam) of Winnipeg and son Ken Reichert (Barbara) of Waterloo; her beloved grandchildren, Andrea Woytowich (Will), Jennifer Miles (Terry) and Brent Voll (LeighAnne); her great-grandchildren, Julia, Evan and Hannah Miles, Abby and Mark Woytowich and Emma and Lilly Voll whom in her healthier life she would have enjoyed immensely. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Eileen White. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Charlie (Richards) in 1984; her brother Fred White and her sister Agnes Bailey. Gladys was born in Winnipeg on June 12, 1917 and lived in the West End. She attended Wolseley, Isaac Brock and Gordon Bell schools. After graduating from high school while taking a secretarial course, she joined the Winnipeg Light Opera Company and sang in many productions at the Walker Theatre. She then found employment as a front desk clerk at the Fort Garry Hotel where she met Charlie (Richards) who worked there as a waiter. They were married on September 2, 1943 and lived on Manitoba Ave. In 1946 they moved to Norwood. After moving so many times in her young life, Gladys was thankful to put down roots on Edgewood Street, a special place with young growing families and terrific neighbours. The Falcon Community Club, King George School, Provincial Home and School Association and the Scottish Pavilion all benefited from her love of involvement. She loved her home and her neighbourhood and spent the next 52 years keeping a spotless house and an impeccably beautiful yard. Gladys loved all living things plants, animals and people, caring for all with great devotion. She was the ultimate caregiver for all her family and friends. After Charlie died in 1984, Gladys began her volunteer career at Misericordia General Hospital. She worked in any capacity required, amassing an amazing 6,888 hours in 12 years. She loved all the people with whom she worked, and volunteered until September 1997 when Alzheimer's made it impossible for her to continue. In January of 1998 Gladys moved to Fort Garry Care Centre and then with Fort Garry Care Centre's untimely closure, she moved in March of 2006 to Meadowood Manor. The family would like to thank the staff, residents and families at Fort Garry Centre who all provided such a loving, caring home for Gladys for eight years. Also a thank you to the staff at Meadowood Manor who showed such care and compassion towards Gladys during her 16 months stay and especially during her final days. The funeral service will be held at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road, at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2007 with Reverend Nancy Finlayson officiating. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Bill Grindell, Harry Krahn, Leonard Woytowich, Cliff Fox, John Richards and Peter Porco. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Friends of Assiniboine Park Conservatory, 15 Conservatory Park Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3P 2N5. One of the many great memories I have from living on Edgewood Street were the fabulous neighbours we had and Mrs. Reichert topped that list……To this day I often ride my bike down Edgewood and your mom always comes to mind. As a young child I would stop by the house almost daily to say hi to your mom and each time she would greet me with a smile and candy. Take care….. I would like to express my condolences to the Reichert family on behalf of the Lysyk "kids". We have such fond memories of your Mom. We remember going daily to her house for gum that she kept on a long strip at the back door. She was always so kind and patient with us all. Her house and yard were always just perfect. We have all moved away from Edgewood street, but it still feels like home. Your Mom was the "heart" of the street. I just wanted to take a moment to express my condolences to the Reichert family on behalf of all the Lysyk "kids". We have been remembering the kindness your Mom showed to all the Edgewood kids. We remember going daily to receive our gum from your Mom's long strip she kept at the back door. She was always positive, kind and kept her house and yard in amazing condition. She really was the "heart" of the street. We have all moved away from Edgewood street for many years now, but it still feels like home. Gladys was the epitome of a caring, gracious Volunteer. When we worked together at Misericordia General Hospital, there was never a time that Gladys did not make the best of a situation. I could always count on her. She was always able to provide comfort and compassion to patients, co workers and staff. Gladys exuded pride and confidence in her family. She always felt blessed. It was an honour to work with Gladys. Shelley Gurvey (Former Director of Volunteer Services. Misericordia General Hospital.) - Posted by: Shelley Gurvey (Co-Worker) on: Jun 25, 2007
