LIONEL MERRITT SMITHSON Suddenly, and peacefully, at 4:30 a.m., Saturday morning, Lionel Merritt Smithson passed away. He was born November 22, 1916 on the farm at Reston, Manitoba. On November 15, 1973 he married Sabra Annie Gould. He was predeceased by his mother and father, sisters, Pearl (Elswood), Phyllis (Percy), and brother Gerald. Left to celebrate his life is his wife Sabra; brothers, Walter (Elinor) of Carman, Jack (Barbra), Ross (Dorene) of Winnipeg; sister-in-law Joyce Smithson of British Columbia; brother-in-law Lorne (Janet) of Brandon, and many nieces and nephews. Lionel went to Belses School #501. He grew up in a big family during the dirty thirties and he worked at neighbouring farms to help with the family finances. There he received room and board but did not receive his five-dollar allowance. During the war Lionel tried to enlist, but due to a hip problem he was unable to join. He worked in the Dundas Steel Works in support of the war effort until he was called home to help his father on the farm. Lionel loved a good dance and a great time. He was always pulling pranks and ready with a good Irish come back. His joyous laugh was something that made everyone around him feel good. He farmed in Pipestone on the home farm for a good number of years until he retired to Melita. Sabra and Lionel traveled south for many winters and enjoyed meeting new people and making new friendships. One of his favourite pastimes was playing pool from which he won many trophies. Together they enjoyed listening and dancing to old time music. The freedom of their motorhome allowed them to go on may trips throughout Canada and the United States. Being a bachelor of 57 years and then married for 33 made for a very full life. A public reception will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Greenview Villa, 170 - 3rd Street S.E.
