STANLEY BLACK (CZORNYJ) Peacefully, at Seven Oaks General Hospital, surrounded by family, on Friday, June 29, 2007, Stan passed away at the age of 86 years. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife of 65 years, Anne; his son Rick (Lise); daughter Christine Pochinko (Dave); sister Olga Diduck (Tom); five grandchildren, Danah Bellehumeur (nee Pochinko and husband Mike), Conrad Pochinko, Shauna Black, Kerri Black, Krista Black; and two great-grandchildren, Hope and Cole Pochinko. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Stan was predeceased by his parents Anton and Mary Czornyj; and his brother Peter. Stan was born May 22, 1921, and was a star athlete in several sports at Isaac Newton High School. After graduating, he worked at Dominion Bridge as a thread mill machine operator. He married Anne on April 18, 1942, and shortly after he enlisted in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945. In the Second World War, he was stationed with Squadron 77 in Full Sutton, England, for 18 months where he was the navigator on a Halifax Bomber. Stan completed many sorties. Returning from a sortie in November 1944, an enemy fighter attacked his aircraft four times. The aircraft was badly damaged with fire breaking out in the port wing. Despite heavy damage to the aircraft and navigational equipment, Pilot Officer Black continued calmly to navigate the aircraft out of enemy territory until a successful emergency landing was made. At all times his devotion to duty and courage had been worthy of the highest praise and he was decorated for valour with the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a hero to us all. Following the war, Stan returned to Winnipeg and worked for the City of Winnipeg in the Department of Veterans Affairs until 1955. In 1956, he re-enlisted in the Air Force as a Captain and was stationed at air defence locations in Lac St. Denis, QC, Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Foymount, ON, and North Bay, ON. Stan retired from the forces on April 1, 1968, and returned to Winnipeg to work in the Planning Department of the City of Winnipeg until 1985 when he retired again. In his retirement years, Stan loved to golf with his family and friends, and spend as much time as he could with his family in his backyard and at many family gatherings. He became an avid photographer, thus leaving us with many permanent memories of family celebrations and happy occasions. At this time, the family would like to express their gratitude to the staff on the 3rd Floor, Unit 7 and ICU at Seven Oaks General Hospital for their constant and compassionate care they provided Stan in his last couple of weeks. Also a thank you to all the homecare workers that cared for Stanley over the years. The family requests, that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stan's memory to the Seven Oaks General Hospital. Prayers will be said July 4, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home. Funeral will be held on July 5, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home. Reception to follow. Arrangements entrusted to: Glen Eden Funeral Home 4477 Main St. 338-7111
