JOHN STEPHEN (JACK) CARMICHAEL 1913 - 2007 Peacefully, at home, on June 27, Jack passed away, three days before his 94th birthday. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his son Bruce; and daughter Lynn Cooper (Ken). He will be missed by his grandchildren, Sandy Bellet, Tracy (Dan Mariotti), John (Brenda) Carmichael, Grant, Neal and Ross Cooper; as well as great-grandchildren, Mason and Nolan Bellet, Jenna and Elle Mariotti, and Ayla Carmichael. He leaves to mourn his brother Alan (Ella) Carmichael; sister-in-law Kay Hermiston; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife Evelyn (Hermiston); his parents John and Elizabeth (Stephen); brother Bill; sister Marjorie (Gordon Leech); daughter-in-law Jenny (Carr); grandson-in-law Oliver Bellet; mother-in-law (Mae Mitchell (Harry); and father-in-law (John); brothers-in-law, Clayton (Winnie), Lorne (Bea) and Jack Hermiston. Jack was born and grew up in the west end of Winnipeg. He attended Principal Sparling and Daniel McIntyre schools and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a diploma in Dairy Science. Jack served in the armed services (Air Force) from 1942 to 1945. He lived his whole life in Winnipeg although he and Evelyn traveled, as well as spent the winter months in California and Texas after retirement. He worked for the City of Winnipeg for 40 years and retired in 1983 as Director of Health Inspectors. Sports were Jack's passions and he excelled in them all. He was a member of the St. Andrews Basketball team of the decade (1940s), former University of Manitoba basketball coach (Grads) and longtime referee of the sport he loved and continued to follow. He was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball (1984) and Softball Halls of Fame (Globelights Team - 2004). He was a Past President and Lifetime Member of Southwood Golf and Country Club and a Past President of Thistle Curling Club. The family wants to thank the many homecare staff who ensured that Jack was able to maintain his independent lifestyle over the last few years. The guys from his two Bridge Clubs, lunches and visits with his ladies and dinners with the infamous FFer's provided a fun quality of life. Trips to visit his BC grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a yearly highlight as were Bruce's visits to Winnipeg, summer and fall each year. He was always there for his Cooper grandsons, cheering them on in their school and sports activities and dispensing sage advice at our weekly Sunday dinners and at the lake, a special place he will eternally share with Evelyn. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park.
