Mrs. Lena Slivinski used to babysit my sister and I when we were very young. She was like a second mother to us and we actually called her “Mommy Lena”. Although we came from different cultures (us being Filipino and herself being Polish), she would tell people that we were her daughters and say it with so much pride. Her husband had passed away a long time before we met her and they were unable to have children, So she would always tell us we were her babies and we were happy to be hers. Lena was the epitome of unconditional love and always put others before herself. When we started school she would volunteer at our elementary school kindergarten class because she loved children. I fondly remember her reading to me and baking her delicious desserts and breads as a child. We went for lots of walks to The Bay and Eaton’s Place Downtown and she would take us to the community pool during the summer. Over a decade has passed I still think of her often and miss her so much. - Posted by: Justine (Gallardo) Bucko (Friend) on: Jan 05, 2022
