IRWIN GREEN 1917 - 2007 It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Irwin Green on Friday, June 22, 2007 at the Victoria General Hospital. Born in Lithuania, Dad immigrated to Canada from Poland with his parents Ida and Harry in 1930. From a very young age, Dad developed a very strong work ethic. After school, he worked at several part time jobs to help support his parents. In 1936, he began his long and rewarding career with City Lumber Company, which spanned 42 years. Subsequent to the closing of City Lumber, Dad did not wish to retire, and continued his career by joining Dominion Lumber (Pacific Avenue). He enjoyed his working retirement years immensely. Beginning at a young age, Irwin was a very passionate volunteer for many Jewish organizations. Included are: The United Jewish Appeal, The Y.M.H.A., The Canadian Jewish Congress, Talmud Torah Day School, Synagogue and the Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate. His free time was spent fundraising for Jewish causes and promoting Jewish education. Predeceased by his loving wife Rowena, July 11, 1976, Dad never really recovered from her untimely passing. Also predeceasing him were his parents, Harry and Ida, to whom Irwin was an exceptionally devoted son. Left to mourn and cherish his memory are his ever loving children, Barry Green, who was a constant source of comfort and companionship to our father, Sharon Zalik, Marsha Friedman and her husband Alan, who became a second son to Dad. He also leaves his four wonderful and devoted granddaughters: Ronit and Kari Zalik and Shira and Hadara Friedman, who were Irv's pride and joy. Being a Zaida was one of his biggest accomplishments. Dad spent his last 11 years at the Sharon Home - 10 of which were in the north end and the last year in the south end. Our heartfelt appreciation to all of the staff at both centres for their loving care, concern and compassion. Special thanks to Dr. Pacin for his excellent care of Dad. Also, our sincere thanks to Suzie, Dad's caregiver at the Sharon Home South for her dedication and support. Funeral services were held on Monday, June 25, 2007 from the Chesed Shel Emes with burial at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetary. Rabbi Avrohum Altein officiated. Pallbearers were Alan Friedman, Alan Greenberg, Rabbi Boruch Heidingsfield, Rami Kleinmann, Gary Margolis and Rabbi David Wexler. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the charity of their choice. Rest in peace Dad and Zaida. We will miss you.
