JOHN WINTONIW 1923 - 2007 It is with great sorrow that the family of John Wintoniw announces his passing peacefully at the age of 83 at the Vita Personal Care Home on July 8, 2007. John is survived by his beloved wife Anne, of 60 years; sons, Ernie (Kathy), Jarvis (Pearl); grandchildren, Jennifer, Becky, Steven (Susan), Timothy, Caroline; great-grandchild Hannah; sister Verna Evankewich, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Nykola and Nellie; brothers, Mike, Morris, Joe, Henry, and Kazimer; daughter Audrey and grandson Adam, both in infancy. Dad was born in Zhoda on September 23, 1923. He worked on the family farm until he joined the army in 1943, where he spent the next two years overseas, returning in 1945. He married Anne Myskiw in 1946, and they began farming in the Zhoda area. Dad worked numerous jobs: on the farm, in lumber camps, building products in Winnipeg, and finally for the Highways Department, where he spent 25 years, retiring in 1988. After retirement, Mom and Dad enjoyed going on several holidays, visiting family and friends, playing cards, hunting, fishing, and most of all, looking after their pristine yard and garden. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed visits from his grandchildren. Dad loved joking and usually had some tall tales to tell. Dad was very involved in the community and was a member of the local Parish Church, Zhoda Cemetery committee and was also a member of the Steinbach Legion for the past 25 years. They moved to Steinbach in 2003, and due to failing health, moved to the Vita Personal Care Home in the fall of 2006. Prayers will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach, MB. The funeral service will be held Monday, July 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, with interment at Zhoda Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zhoda Community Cemetery. Thanks to the Health Care Staff at the Bethesda Hospital and the Vita Personal Care Home, and to all the family and friends that visited and brought Gido his special treats.
