CLARENCE HENRY SAUNDERS June 16, 1907 - July 12, 2007 After having attended his 100th birthday party in June, Clarence passed away peacefully at the Deer Lodge Centre. He will be missed by his only son Gerald (Carol); grandson Dean (Wendy); granddaughter Dorothy (Chad) O'Connor; great-grandchildren Maren, Evan, Carsten, and Colin, as well as many extended family and friends. Clarence was born in Winnipeg, and spent most of his life in St. James. Clarence and Lillian were married July 10, 1937 and spent 59 loving years together until her passing on August 9, 1996. Dad joined the army in 1940 and was posted to Debert, Nova Scotia where he reached the rank of Sergeant. Regretfully his ankle was shattered in a training accident and he spent the next year in rehabilitation before his discharge in 1942. Mom and Dad gave many years of service to the St. James Legion #4 where he was a member for over 60 years and received an honorary life membership in 1973. The Palm Leaf to Meritorious Service Medal was awarded to him in December 1992 and is the legion's highest award that can be granted. Clarence was a proud employee of the T. Eaton Company retiring after 50 years of service in 1972. He loved all sports, and enjoyed many years of curling with the legion and bowling and pitching for Eatons leagues. Dad was a man of conviction who took his responsibilities very seriously. He was dedicated to his family, his country, the legion, and Eatons, and leaves behind a strong legacy. Dad was also predeceased by his parents, five brothers and two sisters. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with a reception to follow at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch Number 4, 1755 Portage Ave. Winnipeg. In Lieu of flowers donations in Clarence's name may be made to the Deer Lodge Hospital Foundation, 2109 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3J 0L3, or the Canadian National Institute For the Blind, 1080 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3G 3M3. The family would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Tower 5 for their care and compassion during Dad's final two years. Dad And Grandpa You never failed to do your best, Your heart was true and tender You lived your life for those you loved And those you love, remember.
