JAMES GORDON MATTHEWS October 5, 1937 - July 16, 2007 Suddenly on Monday, July 16, 2007, James (Jim) Matthews of Riverton, MB, passed away at Arborg and District Health Centre at the age of 69 years. He is survived by his daughter Sherri, and sons Darryl, Dean (Trish) and Mark (Brandy); grandchildren Erin (Eric), Stephanie, Sasha, Dale, Darren, Selena, Sella and great-grandson Lucas; brothers Harvey (Jean), Bruce and sister Velma; also survived by countless friends and relatives. Predeceased by his father Ken and his mother Mae. Dad developed a love for the outdoors early on, hunting and trapping as a kid - something that would stick with him later in life. Many spring days would be spent trapping muskrats with his good friend Jerry Tyluk. In the fall he had enjoyed hunting geese and deer. As Dad grew older he traded in his guns for a pair of binoculars and would become a big supporter of Ducks Unlimited. His house overflowing with various paintings and memorabilia, purchased from their yearly supper and auction at the Geysir Hall - an event he always looked forward to, often buying tickets for family and friends. Born and raised in the Langruth area and later living in McDonald and Thompson, Dad finally settled in Riverton, MB, where he met Toby Gudmundson whom he married in 1961. For many years, he worked as a heavy equipment operator, moving freight to northern Manitoba, working on the pipeline, road building and numerous other projects. He decided to try his hand at business and purchased the east side store, and later Northern Lights Gas Bar and restaurant in Riverton which he successfully operated for 13 years. It was there he forged many friendships and memories, spending countless hours in the restaurant drinking coffee with Matt Anderson, Tyler Johnson and his many, many friends. Dad retired and spent most of his last 10 years residing in Balaton Beach, enjoying his time. He spent many hours outside in his garden, tending to his array of vegetables and berries, a bounty he would generously share with family and friends. Jim was a truly generous and honest man, who would help anyone in need. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Dad we miss you and we love you!! Cremation has taken place. In accordance with his wishes, no formal service will be held. A private interment will take place. A special thanks to Marie Folmes, a true friend who was always there when Dad needed a helping hand. Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference. Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
