JOHN BARCHYN It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of John Barchyn on Monday, July 23, 2007, at the age of 87. Left to cherish his memory is his loving family, wife Sophie, son Derek, daughter Marlene (Merv), grandsons Jonathon and Anthony, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Wasyl and Magdalene Barchyn, brother Mark, and sisters Lena, Doris, Ann, and Pearl. Dad was born in Narol, MB, and remained on the family farm his entire life. He married Sophie in 1956, and they raised their two children there. Except for a short stint in the Army during the Second World War, Dad was a market gardener. He was well known at Peak of the Market for his zucchini, cucumbers, and potatoes, all of which were hand picked. Dad was also the Secretary-Treasurer for Grower's Co-op, which operated the Farmer's Market on Nairn Ave. from 1944 to 1982, until development in the area forced its closure. Dad was always an active member in St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Narol. He was a reader and sang in the choir. He was always interested in what his family members were doing, and always had a joke or funny story to share. He was very grateful to all who came to visit him, both at home and in the hospital. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Selkirk General Hospital; who made his last days very comfortable. Prayers will be held on Thursday, July 26 at 8:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 27 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Chapel with Rev. Robert Kennaugh officiating. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Cemetery, Narol, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church of Narol, Box 24, Group 352, RR 3, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2E7, or Canadian Blood Services or to the charity of your choice.
