SOPHIE STOYAN November 10, 1905 - July 25, 2007 Peacefully, at Misericordia Place Personal Care Home, Sophie went to be with her Lord. She will be lovingly missed by her niece Pat (Paul) Walmsley, niece Dorothy Evans, nephews Gary (Teri) and Gordon (Lorraine) Evans; nieces and nephews residing in the U.S. and great-nieces and nephews, Diana and Clint Mager, David and Colleen Walmsley, Brad (Martina) Evans, Kathy Moto, Paula and Sean Evans-Hill, Kris and Greg Huffman; and great-great-nieces and nephews, Sydney and Tyler Mager, Alex Moto and Ayla Huffman. Sophie has two grandchildren residing in California, Janice Arellano and John Hanaway. Sophie was born in Galicia, Ukraine, in 1905 and immigrated to Canada with her parents Harry and Anne Ewaskiw when she was about six years of age. The family resided in the North End of Winnipeg where her brothers Frank, Michael and Peter and sisters Olive and Minnie were born. Sophie went to work at an early age to help support her family at Acme Box Company, then as a seamstress at Jacob Crawley Ltd. She met and married John Stoyan in 1930 and they adopted a daughter June. June met and married Murray Hanaway and they had children Janice and John. In about 1952 the family moved to Los Angeles, California, where John Stoyan worked in real estate, and Sophie again went to work in a sewing factory. Sophie made many trips back to Winnipeg in the ensuing years to visit her parents. After John Stoyan's passing in 1976, Sophie decided to return to Winnipeg to be near her family. She resided again in the East Kildonan area, meeting new friends and re-acquainting with her old friends. Favourite pastimes for Sophie were meeting friends at Eaton's Grill Room for lunch, bowling at the Roxie Lanes, enjoying family gatherings and visiting with her family. When, at the age of 92, she had a fall in her apartment and could no longer live on her own, she became a resident first at Misericordia Health Centre then in 1999 Misericordia Place Personal Care Home. She was one of the first residents in the new building. Sophie was predeceased by her parents Ann and Harry Ewaskiw, brothers Michael, Peter and Frank, sisters Minnie and Olive, and sister-in-law Kay Ewaskiw, and Robin and Keith Evans. The family would like to sincerely thank all the staff at Apple Tree Lane for their kind and compassionate care, as well the pastoral care team of Father Vince Herner and Teresa Campbell. The Celebration of Sophie's life will be on Friday, July 27 at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel - Misericordia Place - 44 Furby Street, presided by Father Vince Herner and Teresa Campbell. Flowers gratefully declined. Should you wish to make a donation in memory of Sophie, please send to The Compassionate Friends, 685 William Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
