EDNA LAW Edna Law passed away Thursday, July 19, 2007 at Deer Lodge in Winnipeg. She is survived by her son Chris (Colleen) and grandson Jamie. She was predeceased by her husband Ches, her parents, John and Emily, her step-father Charles and her sister Ethel. Edna was born in Winnipeg. During tough economic times, she moved with her family to Detroit, Michigan. While in elementary school, she won a Detroit-wide spelling bee. The family returned to Winnipeg, and Edna graduated from high school with the Governor-General's medal. During the Second World War, she worked for the RCAF, and then as secretary to the OC, RCMP, at Dauphin. She moved back to Winnipeg and continued to work for the RCMP. At a social gathering, she gave a young constable some valuable advice on what cards to play. He took the advice and Ches and Edna were married in 1947. Their postings included Winnipeg, Gretna, Headingley and Flin Flon. Edna and Chris were evacuated by train to Winnipeg because of the 1950 flood. Ches stayed behind. Edna worked as a court reporter in Winnipeg, secretary to the director of the Flin Flon Hospital, and as a social worker for the RM of Assiniboia, City of St. James, and the City of Winnipeg. She took early retirement in order to care for her mother. Edna enjoyed music, art, books, and politics. Some neighbours may remember elections where campaign signs from the left and the right were displayed on the front lawn. She and Ches travelled to Europe, the British Isles, and across North America. Edna had a very heavy foot, exhibited on all-night runs from Flin Flon to Winnipeg in the early 1960's. Ches would be asleep and Edna would hit 90 mph on the straight stretches. She learned to dislike John Denver, after a drive to San Francisco. Ches owned exactly two 8-track tapes, by Mr. Denver. Edna's grandson, Jamie, became the focal point of her life. She was extremely proud of his accomplishments. Anyone who talked to Edna would hear about Jamie, the Historica Fairland the Provincial Science Symposiums. The family wish to thank Yolanda and her staff at Homecare, Dr. W. Schellenberg, the Winnipeg Fire/Paramedic Service, and the staff at Grace and Deer Lodge for their compassion and tireless efforts. Many thanks to the RCMP Veterans Association and especially to Agnes Selin of the RCMP Veterans Ladies Association. Special thanks to the Buscemi family for their kindness and support over many years. Memorial Service will be held at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Avenue, Aubrey Street entrance on Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. Interment at a later date at the RCMP Cemetery in Regina. Donations may be made in Edna's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2H6. neil bardal inc. 949-2200 www.nbardal.mb.ca
