FLORENCE JOSEPHINE KUMMEN (nee Mialkowski) On Tuesday, July 24, 2007, Florence died at home peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Remaining to forever cherish Florence's memory are her devoted husband of 53 years Carl T. Kummen; children Maureen of Winnipeg, Leon (Deb) of Lake in the Hills, IL, Madelon (Greg Penner) of Vermilion Bay, ON, Rita Cooper (Ron) of Vermilion Bay, ON, Richard (Kathleen) of West Vancouver, BC, Garth of Stonewall, MB, Pat (Kim) of Winnipeg, Nancy (Shaun Roberts) of Kelowna, BC, and Brendan of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, Michelle, Matthew, Conrad, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Blake, Kristen, Leo, Zoe, Alex, and Max; her brothers, Wally Mialkowski (Jean), Col. Conrad Mialkowski (Lorraine), Ted Mialkowski (Christine); as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Leonia and Josef Mialkowski; an infant child; and grandson Gavin Penner. Born in Winnipeg in 1930, Florence was raised on the family farm near Stony Mountain with her three brothers. She attended high school and business college in Winnipeg. Florence subsequently found employment and met husband-to-be Carl. They married in 1953 and together raised nine children in the Woodhaven area of Winnipeg. Family was the centre of her life. Mom's many and varied interests - including gardening, baking, music, art, literature and language learning - motivated and encouraged her children to pursue higher education and personal goals. Her hard work, sacrifices, honesty, and respect for others continue to inspire her children and grandchildren in their daily lives. Florence travelled extensively, visiting her family, and enjoying many adventures along the way. In 1961, Florence joined the St. Paul The Apostle Parish. There, she taught catechism, sang in the choir, was a Eucharistic minister, and volunteered at bingo for many years. Florence's strong faith sustained her throughout her life. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400 Portage Avenue, with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant presiding. Interment followed in the Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Florence's memory to the charity of your choice.
