Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHERBERT HUDSON June 6, 1947 - July 30, 2007 Peacefully with beloved family and friends at his bedside at the Health Sciences Centre. Herb is survived by his wife, Valerie; daughters, Anita (Harold), Penelope (Whelan), Dianna (Shawn); sons, Vince, Travis (Chelsey); and seven grandchildren, Tara, Jhordan, Jules, Wyatt, Westin, Ariana and Summer; his many godchildren; father-in-law Myles Traverse; brothers, Alex (Joan) and Bill; brothers-in-law, Howard (Rubina), Bert (Dorothy), Oral (Marilyn) and sister-in-law Vera (Jonathon). Herb was predeceased by his mom Ruth, dad Hugh, mother-in-law Chlista, sister-in-law Rosabelle, sister-in-law Marion, brother-in-law Ray, nephew Colin, niece-in-law Lisa and grand-niece Judy Rose. Herb was born and raised at Peguis First Nation, attended school at Peguis until grade nine. He went to Dauphin Residential School for three years, graduating in 1966. For two years, Herb was Band Manager at Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation. He then attended Brandon University before being called back home to work at Peguis Central School as a Home-School Coordinator. In 1978, Herb was elected Band Councillor for Peguis First Nation where he served two terms. Herb was active in all types of sports, which included playing baseball, hockey, curling, golf and of course hunting, four-wheeling, snowmobiling and boating. While in Brandon, Herb made amateur-league baseball history with the Brandon Clippers by hitting three home runs in one game. On the thirtieth anniversary of the game date, the Brandon Sun wrote about this distinctive record, which has never been broken. Later on, he played fastball with the Peguis Braves, Peguis Warriors and Jackhead Eagles and also partook in softball, playing with the Harwill Hurricanes. It did not matter with which team he played he simply loved to play the game. Herb's obsession for the past 15 years was golf. He loved his golf clubs so much, he kept them at his bedside, most notably his beloved Big Bertha. He golfed in Las Vegas with his brother-in-law Jonathon. His golfing buddies were from all over. Herb played senior men's hockey in his early years, went to Texas Hold 'em games at Penny and Whelan's, Tunner and Marlene's, Bob and Wilma's and Eric's. He enjoyed the games whether he won or not, because playing with his friends meant a lot. This roused his competitive spirit. As a lifelong farmer, Herb shared a special kinship with the local farming community and served on several agriculture boards. At the time of his hospitalization, Herb was a representative on the Indian Agricultural Council of Manitoba. He believed that people should work for what they want and was proud of his children for doing just that. His favourite sayings were do things for your own good and do what you got to do. Herb loved to tease people, especially his family and close friends. Wake services will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2007 at Herb and Val's residence in Peguis and on Friday, August 3, 2007 at the St. Matthew's Anglican Church at 7:30 p.m. both evenings. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Peguis, Manitoba. Viewing will follow the service. Rev. Barry Bear and Rev. Wesley Barrett officiating. Interment to follow at the St. Matthew's Anglican Cemetery. Our family's sincerest gratitude goes out to the staff of Percy E. Moore Hospital and the GH-5 Unit and SICU of the Health Sciences Centre. Special thanks to Chief Glenn Hudson and wife Sharon and the council members of the Peguis First Nation. Many thanks and blessings to those who came to see Dad during his time in the hospital. How far is heaven? When can I go? To see my daddy, he's there I know. How far is Heaven? Let's go tonight. I want my Daddy to hold me tight. Arrangements Entrusted To: ANDERSON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME Ashern, Manitoba 1-866-293-4951
