Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMYRTLE LENA BROOKS On July 30, 2007 Myrtle Brooks passed away peacefully at the Calvary Place Personal Care Home at the age of 83. Myrtle was predeceased by her parents John and Katrina (Shroeder) Derksen, first husband Frederick Kenneth Walshaw, second husband Thomas Lawrence Brooks, sister Leona Reitmeier, and son-in-law Dennis Smith. She is survived by daughters Diane (Jon) Stefanson of Headingley, MB, Jean Smith of Vancouver, brother Philip (Gertrude) Derksen of Winnipeg, and by numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Myrtle was born and raised in Winnipeg and lived her married life in Grenfell, SK. In addition to household duties she and her first husband Ken owned and operated movie theatre businesses in the towns of Broadview and Wolseley. Myrtle was actively involved in a number of organizations in Saskatchewan such as the Grenfell Legion Ladies Auxiliary, The Eleanor Rebekah Lodge of Grenfell, The Arthritis Society, The Saskatchewan Liberal Association (Life Member), and the United Church of Grenfell. The Church sponsored a family of Vietnamese boat people' in the late 1970s which Myrtle cared for over a period of time at her home in Grenfell. She later became active in the new Trinity Presbyterian Church of Grenfell. On the retirement of Myrtle's second husband, Tom Brooks, they began to travel to other parts of the world. After Mr. Brook's untimely passing due to cancer, Myrtle decided to continue her travels and visited countries in Africa and Asia. Myrtle developed health issues that resulted in a need for a high level of care, first at the Lakeside Nursing Home in Wolseley, SK and then at Calvary Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Both personal care homes provided caring and competent attention to her needs in attractive facilities. A service will be held at Calvary Place Personal Care Home chapel room at 10:30 a.m.on August 22, 2007. Interment of cremation remains will be at the Grenfell Town Cemetery at a future date.
