EDWARD MAYER Peacefully on Saturday, July 28, 2007. Ed is survived by his wife Doris; children, Paul (Janine), Lorna (Richard Stecenko), and Jeff (Lana Fahrni); and two sisters. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Carly, Paige, Marija and Max who affectionately knew him as Papa; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom have many fond memories of their Uncle Ed. Ed was born in Hastings, Minnesota, in September 1922 and at a young age moved with his family to Winnipeg. Having grown up in challenging circumstances during the Great Depression, Ed served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and went on to become a successful self-made businessman. He was a longtime member of the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club and Southwood Country Club, both of which were sources of many hours of activity and fellowship for him. Ed will be remembered for his quick humour (which included an affinity for puns) as well as his friendly and gentlemanly demeanor. He will be greatly missed. A reception will be held at the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club (275 Stradbrook Avenue) on Wednesday, August 8 at 3:00 p.m. Memories of Ed will be shared and an opportunity to speak will be provided for any friends and family who may wish to do so. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Andrews Street Family Centre would be appreciated.
