KATHLEEN MARGARET SMITH (nee Mackarness) March 29, 1912 - August 2, 2007 Kathleen Peg Smith passed away peacefully on August 2, 2007 at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, who passed away in 1995 at the age of 81, as well as her sisters Marjorie Francis, Kaye O'Neil, Freda Bennett and Jean Bronson. Her remaining sister Eleanor Sigurdson resides in Abbotsford, British Columbia. She is survived by her daughter Jan Leblond (Robert) of Calgary, Alberta, and her son Hugh Smith (Juliette) of Winnipeg. She leaves behind her grandchildren Jennifer Leblond (Tim), Denise Leblond, Andrea Smith, Garth Smith and Daniele Behn-Smith; three great-grandchildren Alex Bonnah, William Cran and Luke Cran. Born in Buckinghamshire, England in 1912 to Charles and Evelyn Mackarness (nee Arthur), she came to Canada in 1914 aboard the Olympic. As a young girl she moved to Winnipeg from Kamloops, British Columbia, staying with the MacQuarrie family on their dairy farm in St. James, where she would build a group of friends that she would maintain for life. After meeting and marrying Bill in 1937, she proudly spent the next 60 years in the West End of Winnipeg, where life would continue to revolve around friends and neighbours, managing the kids and their friends, and occasionally taking a break from it all with her sewing circle and bowling club made up of ladies from the neighbourhood. But her pride was her children and grandchildren, an abiding love she expressed by being a hands on Grandma until well into her late 80s, and by beaming with happiness at every opportunity to visit with her great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on August 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, 774-7474, opposite the Children's Hospital. The family would like to extend sincerest thanks to the staff at Meadowood Manor for the kindness and care extended to Kathleen during her stay. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home, 577 St. Anne's Road, Winnipeg, MB, R2M 3G5.
