JOHN KOSTIUK After a lengthy illness, John Kostiuk passed away in the Dauphin General Hospital at the age of 76. John was born on the family farm on January 28, 1931 in the Riding Park Community, south of Grandview, MB. He attended the school at Sugar Loaf Country School. John left school at an early age to work on the family farm. In his 30's John tried other occupations. He worked at Inland Steel in Winnipeg, MB during the winter months. He then returned to help his cousin, Matt Koroway, to build houses in Dauphin, one of which was a retirement home for his parents. But farming was his love and he and his brother Walter took over the the family farm in 1968. John farmed together with his father and his brothers, Mike and Walter for a span of over 50 years. His strength on the farm was raising cattle, especially the Charolais breed. It was a sad day in John's life when it was time to sell the cattle in 1996. In 2001, the family farm was sold and John and his brother Walter retired on a beautiful river lot in Grandview, MB, once again close to nature. John will be remembered for his love of nature, especially gardening, he was always planting trees and took great pride in the flower beds of roses and orange lilies. John loved to camp in the Duck Mountains and especially enjoyed quadding with his brother Mike and many friends. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting for deer, elk and moose. John together with his brother Walter permitted Manitoba Water Services to dig a well on their farm which supplies many farm families in the Grandview area with good quality water. John was a long-time member of the Riding Park Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riding Park and sat on the board of Manitoba Pool. John was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Lillian Kostiuk and his brother Mike and wife Nellie Kostiuk. Left to mourn and cherish fond memories of John are his brother Walter of Dauphin, MB; his sister Olga and her husband Bill Runnalls of Winnipeg, MB; his nieces Shirley and her husband Ken Briault of Drumheller, AB and Marlene and her husband Cliff Sul of Winnipeg, MB and his many cousins and friends. Prayers will be offered on Monday, August 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Riverside Evergreen Chapel in Dauphin. The funeral service will held at the Grandview St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 14 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Yaroslav Strukhalyak officiating. Interment will follow in the Riding Park Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Parish Cemetery. His brother-in-law, Bill Runnalls will offer a tribute to John. Active pallbearers will be Ken Briault, Bill Runnalls, David Bonchuk, Larry Bohdanowich, Jeff Safronetz and Larry Lobert. All John's family and friends are to consider themselves as honourary pallbearers.
