CORNELIUS (CASEY / KEES) ADRIANUS GROOT November 5, 1928 August 11, 2007 After a courageous battle, Casey passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Dad/Opa will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Antonia (nee Jonker), and his six children: Marge Burzuik (Dale), Andy (Louella), Ron (Robin), Debbie Barry (Brian), Tom (Lori) and Diane. Opa was blessed with 14 grandchildren: Bradley, Matthew, Leanne, Jonathan, Eric, Shane, Jennifer, Nicole, Christian, Jessica, Courtney, Scott, Meghan and Olivia. Dad was predeceased by his grandson Bjorn; his parents, Jacob and Margareth, and his brothers, George and Peter. Dad is also survived by his siblings: Eric (Agnes), Jack (Kathy), Tina Bonekamp (Meindert), Truus Schoofs, Greta Vandersweep (John), Anne Schoofs (Louie), Bill (Evelyn), Tom (Alice) and Joe (Georgina), as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Dad was born in Heer-hugowaard, Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1954. Dad met the love of his life, Toni, in Winnipeg and they married in 1957. Dad was a devote Catholic and an active member of St. Stanislaus Church in East Selkirk. He was an extremely hard worker who worked a variety of jobs from logging with his brothers to construction for B.A.C.M. However, Dad's passion was farming and he fulfilled his dream by buying a farm in East Selkirk in 1974. He retired from farming in 1997 and he and mom moved into their dream home on Ferry Road in East Selkirk. Dad spent many hours tending his yard, growing tulips and waving to his many friends as they drove by. A very special thank you to the wonderful staff of the Selkirk General Hospital for their personal, compassionate and loving care. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 16 at 11:00 a.m. in the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, Selkirk with Fr. Jerry Talarski officiating. Interment will follow in the East Selkirk Cemetery. Opa's grandsons will be his pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
