LOIS JOY LYONS (nee MAHONEY) Peacefully, on Sunday, August 12, 2007 at Riverview Health Centre, Lois passed away after a lengthy, but courageous battle with cancer at the age of 68 years. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her mother Alfretta; daughter Tracy (Kevin); son Christopher (Kerry, Melanie and Dylan); partner Ray; brother Barney (Lorraine); special friends, Ruth, Gini and Marilyn; pet rabbit Pearl; as well as numerous relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father, William in 1959; and her brother Jeremy in 1997. Born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Lois moved to Nipawin, Saskatchewan at the age of four. She lived in Nipawin until 1957 and then attended the University of Saskatchewan. Lois taught one year in Saskatchewan, then moved to Winnipeg where she married and raised a family. She taught for the Winnipeg, St. Vital and Interlake School Divisions, retiring in 1994. Lois was a volunteer for the Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre prior to her illness. Some of her hobbies included reading, sewing, boating, fishing, canoeing, traveling and generally enjoying the outdoors. In particular Lois enjoyed the time spent at Birch Lake and the time spent with family and friends. Her lifetime goal was to become a good person. Lois' greatest challenge was dealing with terminal cancer. She succeeded in the former but the latter was too formidable despite a valiant and lengthy battle. In compliance with Lois' wishes no formal funeral service will be held. The family would like to thank Dr. Wong and Staff at CancerCare Manitoba (St. Boniface), Bunty Anderson, Dr. R. Hayward (Pembina Clinic), nurse Val and the Doctors and Staff at Palliative Care (St. Boniface) and Riverview Palliative Care for their care, dedication and compassion. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Lois' memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9 or to a charity of one's choice.
