JACOB (JACK) FLATT It is with deep sadness that the family of Jacob (Jack) Flatt announces his passing on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife and best friend Mary (nee Falk), his daughter Lorraine, her husband James A. Friesen, and his daughter Linda Eloise, the delight of his heart; his sisters Olga Shier and Elsie (Alfred) Neufeld, and in-laws David and Patricia Falk, Erna and Herb Buller and Herb and Joan Falk, 18 nieces and nephews along with their spouses and 44 great-nieces and nephews. Jack was born on November 7, 1922 in the village of Wygoda, Poland though his family was of Austrian/German descent; Jack immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1928 and spent the rest of his life living and working in the Elmwood/East Kildonan area of Winnipeg. The Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church was his spiritual home for all these years; to it he gave generously of his time, designing talents, and construction abilities. He deeply valued the support of his faith community. In 1947, he married Mary Rose Falk; in that same year, he set up a business with his father, Flatt's Truck and Trailer Body Works. After the business was sold in 1968 Jack joined the Research and Development Dept. of Motor Coach Industries, the designers and producers of Greyhound buses. He retired to a comfortable and contented life in 1987, spending almost daily time tuning up his 1991 Buick, putzkying around the house and taking care of the family cottage in Gimli. He was predeceased by infant daughter Beth-Anne Sofia, parents Philip and Sophie Flatt and brother-in-law Andrew Shier; also sister-in-law Viola Horch Falk, father and mother-in-law Rev. W. W. and Helen Falk, niece Laura Falk and nephew and godson Joshua Falk. Funeral services will be held for Jack Flatt on Monday, August 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 145 Henderson Hwy. with interment in the Elmwood Cemetery. Reception at the church to follow. Viewing to take place prior to the service. Donations to W.A.S.O., a sheltered workshop for the mentally handicapped at which his daughter Linda was a client for 20 years, would be greatly appreciated.
