IRENE SLAVITCH (SAWCHUK) March 5, 1931 - August 19, 2007 Vichnay Pam'yat It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Irene Jeanne Slavitch (Sawchuk), on Sunday, August 19, 2007, at the Sarcee Hospice. She will always be remembered by her loving husband, Alex Sawchuk; her daughter Janette and her husband John Gescher, and their children, Stefanie and Eric; her son Michael and his wife Melanie Slavitch, and their children, Elli, Noah, and Alexander of Ottawa; her stepchildren Rosemary, Michael and Terry Sawchuk of Winnipeg; as well as numerous relatives and friends in Canada, Poland and Ukraine. Irene was born on March 5, 1931, in Montargis, France, to Florian and Joanna Szulfer. Her parents died when she was a child, and she was raised by her maternal grandmother in the village of Chanyz, Ukraine. Irene lived in Lviv, Ukraine, and Wroclaw, Poland, and immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada, in 1965 where she worked for the Manitoba Home Care Program for many years. Irene and Alex moved to Calgary in 1992. Irene was blessed with golden hands and excelled at gardening, cooking, sewing and needlework. She loved to entertain her family and friends. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing and dance. She also had a wonderful sense of humour. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Prayers will take place on Friday, August 24, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church (704 6 Street NE). Divine Liturgy will be served at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2007, at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, with Rev. Serhiy Harahuc officiating.
