Date of Passing: Aug 22, 2007
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARIE (MARY) SCHMIDT (nee GELHORN) October 1, 1916 August 22, 2007 For 90 wonderful years we have had the incredible gift of Marie in our lives. If you didn't know Mom, you would have wanted to. She could warm you with her smile, her laughter was contagious, you would have been intrigued by her stories, surprised by her wit, energized by her zest for life and overwhelmed by her generosity. Marie was predeceased by her loving husband Bill; parents George and Molly; brothers, George, Henry, Godfrey, and Alex; sisters-in-law, Barbara and Elsie and nieces, Eileen, Ruth and Carolyn. Left to continue her legacy of love are her children: son Bob (Donna), grandchild Lorena (Darren) and great-grandchild Sigmund; daughter Lorraine (Frank), grandchildren, Andrea (Luis), and Dana (Derrick). Along with her immediate family, she will be greatly missed by many special nieces, nephews, family and friends. Mom was born and lived her life in the North End of Winnipeg except for the last 13 years in North Kildonan. As the only girl in a family with four brothers, she developed a strong work ethic and a great sense of humour. She met William (Bill) Schmidt while working at Paulin Chambers. They were married in 1939 and shared 55 fulfilling years. She continued her career in the cookie business until Bob and Lorraine kept her fully employed at home. She returned to the workforce and retired from The Bay Advertising Department after 15 enjoyable years. Mom had the special ability to make you feel like you were the most important person in the world. She never forgot to send a card or make a phone call to acknowledge an important event. She was a great cook and baker, you never left her home hungry or empty handed. Mom was a classy lady; she always looked like a million bucks, with her colourful wardrobe and not a hair out of place. For over 50 years, once a week, she played cards with her sisters-in-law, Barbara, Elsie, Helen, and Senda. Although Mom was a great sport, she took her card games very seriously and expected everyone to play by the rules, even her grandchildren. We will cherish our memories of all the contests she entered and won, and the delightful visits to the casino. Marie had an awesome life and was at peace knowing that she would be with her Lord. The devotion of her children and grandchildren is a testament to her life. She leaves us the same way she lived her life for 90 spirited years; with love, courage, grace, warmth and enthusiasm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 815 Inkster Blvd. with Pastor Don Engel officiating. Interment will be at Brookside Cemetery followed by a lunch served at Christ Lutheran Church. Active pallbearers will be Alex Gelhorn, Bruce Gelhorn, Richard Pater, Terry Durham, Richard Ducheck and Fred Smith. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 815 Inkster Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R2X 1N3, or a charity of your choice. I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when the day is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the way, of happy times, and laughing times, and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun, of happy memories I leave behind when the day is done. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
